Bilateral relationship between Hong Kong and Estonia continues to remain healthy. The merchandize trade between the two economies amounted to US$104 million in 2019. Hong Kong also played a significant role in the trade between the Mainland of China and Estonia. Around 9.4% or US$90 million of the total trade between Estonia and the Mainland of China routed through Hong Kong in 2019.
In 2019, Hong Kong’s main exports to Estonia were perfumery, cosmetics or toilet preparations (excluding soaps) (28.7%); made-up articles, wholly or chiefly of textile materials (28.0%); and toys, games and sporting goods (21.1%).
Hong Kong continues to forge closer ties with Estonia. In 2019, Hong Kong and Estonia signed a Comprehensive Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement (CDTA). The agreement brings a greater degree of certainty on tax liabilities for those who engage in cross-border business activities, and helps promote bilateral trade and investment activities between Hong Kong and Estonia.
In 2019, the then Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Mr James Lau, visited Tallinn to sign the CDTA with the Minister of Finance of Estonia, Mr Martin Helme. During his visit, Mr Lau had a meeting with Mr Martin Helme to exchange views on resilience of the financial sector against the challenges of global economic downturn and trade tension. They also discussed the development of cryptocurrencies and their impact on monetary and financial stability as well as anti-money laundering initiatives.
In 2019, 2756 visitors from Estonia visited Hong Kong.
